gay or lesbian family
form of cohabitation in which individuals of the same sex live together, with or without children, and share a sexual relationship.
gender definition (gender identity)
the perception of self as male or female.
gender role identity
the behaviour identified by one's culture as appropriate to that gender; how a person behaves as male or female.
general adaptation syndrome (GAS)
the response of the body to physiological stress.
generic name
a drug's original name assigned by the individual or company that originally marketed the drug.
genogram
diagram of the family constellation. It shows the structure of the intergenerational relationships of a family.
gestation
term used to describe the development of new life that takes place in the womb between conception and birth.
gingivae
the gums.
gingivitis
inflammation of the gums.
gliding
movement in one plane, as in sliding.
glomerulus
each nephron consists of a glomerulus( cluster of capillaries).
gluconeogenesis
the formation of glucose from proteins and fatty acids when carbohydrate stores are depleted.
glycogen
a polysaccharide stored in the cells after the breakdown of carbohydrate.
glycogenolysis
the conversion of glycogen to glucose in the liver.
good samaritan laws
legislation designed to protect the professional practitioner from malpractice suits arising from care given to the injured at the scene of an accident or other emergency.
grand theory/mega theory
a global statement that identifies phenomena (concepts or ideas) that are of interest to the discipline.
graph
shows how many times each score has occurred, displaying the frequency of each score and illustrating the distribution of scores.
grief
the total response to loss.
grounded theory
a theory that has been grounded in reality derived from data systematically obtained from social research.
gurgles
abnormal breath sounds described as a coarse, continuous sound produced by air flowing through large passages narrowed by secretions, mucosal swelling or obstruction.
gustatory
pertaining to the sense of taste.
