Writing Rewards Student Essay Contest
Submission Guidelines
The essay must be no more than 1,500 words in length, and in response to one (1) of the topics from the designated list below.
- Make a comparison between high school and college or university. What are the differences?
What are the similarities? Write an essay comparing your experience(s) with both.
- Write an essay describing an experience that changed your life.
What happened? Why is the experience significant and special?
Include vivid details to support your views.
- Write an essay classifying different types of challenges faced by today's
college and university students. Ensure that each category is distinct. Use illustrations
and examples to define each category.
- Compare two attitudes towards global warming. Think about the reasons people feel
it's a natural occurrence and others feel it's man-made. In your essay, illustrate
your points with specific examples. Do some research and include quotations from
reputable sources.
- Write an essay explaining the steps people should take when choosing a career.
Use illustrations and observations to support your views.
- Write an essay listing the ways in which your efforts to reduce your carbon
footprint have affected your daily life. Please be specific.

This brief booklet is a collection of student essays drawn from submissions to Pearson
Canada's WRITING REWARDS Student Essay Contest.
Eligibility
The contest is open only to legal residents of Canada who are enrolled in an English course at the time of submission
at a higher education institution in Canada. This contest is not open to residents of Quebec.
Please see the Official Rules for further information on eligibility requirements.
Deadline
Submissions must be postmarked or emailed on or before April 15th, 2011.
Judging Criteria
The essays will be judged on the following criteria:
- How well the essay addresses the question or topic (opinion and subjectivity will not factor into the decision)
- How clearly the thesis is presented
- How well the piece is organized
- How specific the support is for the thesis
- How relevant the analysis is of the support
- Writing correctness (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
