Writing Rewards Student Essay Contest

Official Rules

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. CONTEST OPEN ONLY TO LEGAL RESIDENTS OF CANADA WHO ARE ENROLLED IN AN ENGLISH COURSE AT THE TIME OF SUBMISSION AT A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION IN CANADA. THIS CONTEST IS NOT OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF QUEBEC.

Important: Please read these rules carefully before entering the Pearson Canada WRITING REWARDS Student Essay Contest (the "Contest").

The Contest is a contest whereby a student writes and submits an Essay in response to one (1) of the following topics:

  1. Make a comparison between high school and college or university. What are the differences? What are the similarities? Write an essay comparing your experience(s) with both.
  2. Write an essay describing an experience that changed your life. What happened? Why is the experience significant and special? Include vivid details to support your views.
  3. Write an essay classifying different types of challenges faced by today's college and university students. Ensure that each category is distinct. Use illustrations and examples to define each category.
  4. Compare two attitudes towards global warming. Think about the reasons people feel it's a natural occurrence and others feel it's man-made. In your essay, illustrate your points with specific examples. Do some research and include quotations from reputable sources.
  5. Write an essay explaining the steps people should take when choosing a career. Use illustrations and observations to support your views.
  6. Write an essay listing the ways in which your efforts to reduce your carbon footprint have affected your daily life. Please be specific.

By submitting an Essay, all contestants agree to be bound by these Official Rules.

  1. How To Enter.

    You may enter either by (i) completing an online entry form found at www.pearsoncanada.ca/writingrewards and submitting your Essay electronically or (ii) going online at www.pearsoncanada.ca/writingrewards and downloading and printing an entry form for the Contest and mailing the completed entry form with the Essay to: Loula March, Pearson Canada, 26 Prince Andrew Place, Don Mills, ON, M3C 2T8. Any Essay submitted must be from the designated list of topics, must contain no more than 1,500 words, and must conform to the Essay guidelines in order to be eligible for the Contest. Limit one (1) entry per student. All entries, entry forms and Essays become the property of Pearson and will not be acknowledged or returned. By submitting an entry, you agree that Pearson shall have the right (but not the obligation) to publish any Essay, or part thereof, in its textbooks, web sites, online database(s), educational programs, and other associated promotional and publishing material.

  2. Eligibility.

    Open to legal CANADIAN residents who are students enrolled in an English course at a Higher Education Institution in Canada at the time of submission. To be eligible to enter: entries must be originated and written solely by the entrant; the Essay's title must appear at the top of the first page; the Essay's pages must be double-spaced and numbered; and the Essay must be received by Pearson Canada in the format designated. Employees of Pearson Canada and any of its affiliate companies, subsidiaries, agents, professional advisors, advertising and promotional agencies, and immediate families of each are not eligible to enter.

  3. Disclaimer.

    Pearson Canada, all participating sponsors and any of their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, professional advisors, employees and agencies will not be responsible for (1) any late, lost, incomplete, misrouted, misdirected, postage due or damaged entries or errors in transmission; (2) any Contest disruptions, injuries, losses or damages caused by events beyond the control of Pearson Canada; or (3) any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the Contest.

    Pearson and its agencies are not responsible for technical, hardware, software or telephone malfunctions of any kind and shall not be liable for failed, incorrect, incomplete, inaccurate, garbled or delayed electronic communications utilized in this Contest which may limit the ability to participate in the Contest. If for any reason, (including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other cause beyond the control of Pearson, which corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest), the Contest is not capable of being conducted as described in these rules, Pearson shall have the right, at its sole discretion, to modify and/or cancel the Contest. Pearson shall have the right, at its sole discretion, to verify the enrollment of student winners and validity of originality of work.

    Electronic entries must include a valid e-mail address for the entrant. In the event of a dispute as to the identity or eligibility of winner based on an e-mail address, the winning entry will be declared made by the "Authorized Account Holder" of the e-mail address submitted at the time of the entry. "Authorized Account Holder" is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet Access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.

    All entries are final. Once submitted, the essay will not be returned for corrections editing, or augmentation.

  4. Contest Period.

    The contest opens at 12:01am EST on October 15th, 2010 and ends April 15th, 2011 11:59 pm EST (the "Deadline"). In order to be eligible to win the prize all entries must be postmarked or emailed by the Deadline.

  5. Prizes.

    On or about May 15th, 2011 one student will be selected as the first place winner of the Contest; a second student will be selected as the second place winner of the Contest; and a third student will be selected as the third place winner of the Contest. Honorable mention will then be awarded to the next three (3) students. Prizes are as follows:

    First Place: five hundred dollars ($500) awarded to the student selected as the first place winner of the Contest.
    Second Place: three hundred fifty dollars ($350) awarded to the student selected as the second place winner of the Contest.
    Third Place: two hundred dollars ($200) awarded to the student selected as the third place winner of the Contest.
    Honorable Mention: extended to the next 3 contestants.

    The winner will be notified in writing by e-mail or by mail shortly after the selection of the winner. If the grand prize is not claimed within 7 days after notification of prize award, it will be forfeited and awarded to an alternate winner. Any prize awarded hereunder is not transferable. No substitutions or exchanges (including for cash) of any prizes will be permitted. All prizes are awarded "AS IS" and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose).

  6. General Release.

    By entering the Contest, all entrants release Pearson Canada, participating sponsors and any of their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees and agencies (collectively, the "Released Parties") from any liability whatsoever, and waive any and all causes of action, for any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the Contest or resulting from acceptance, possession, or use or misuse of any prize including, without limitation, personal injuries, death, property damage, and claims based on publicity rights, defamation, invasion of privacy, defamation, portrayal in a false light, copyright infringement, patent infringement, trademark infringement and merchandise delivery.

  7. Ownership of Entries.

    All Essays, irrespective of whether they are the winning entry, become the property of Pearson Canada and will not be acknowledged or returned. Without limiting the foregoing, by entering, all entrants shall be deemed to have transferred and assigned to Pearson Canada, their respective successors and assigns, absolutely and forever, all right, title and interest (including copyrights and other intellectual property rights) in and to their Essays, including the right to edit, modify and prepare derivative works based upon the Essays, and to display, reproduce, transmit and deliver the Essays in and by any and all media now in existence or hereafter discovered or devised throughout the world in perpetuity. Entrants agree to execute any and all documents requested by Pearson Canada to effectuate Pearson's rights described in this paragraph. Entrants hereby irrevocably and unconditionally waive any and all moral rights or any rights of similar nature under any law in any jurisdiction in and to any and all elements of the Essays. Entrants represent and warrant to Pearson that (i) any Essays submitted are the original creation of entrant, or entrant's students; (ii) Pearson's use of such Essays as contemplated in these rules will not violate the rights of any third party; and (iii) entrant has obtained all rights necessary (including but not limited to releases from other students, teachers, students' parents or legal guardians or any other third parties) in order to transfer these rights.

  8. Use of Winner's Information.

    Except where prohibited by law, acceptance of a prize constitutes permission to use the winner's name, picture or likeness, school and school name, province of residence, and prize information, without limitation, for promotional purposes without further permission or compensation.

  9. Rules Request.

    To obtain a copy of these rules, send a stamped, self-addressed business-size envelope to Pearson at Pearson Canada, 26 Prince Andrew Place, Don Mills, ON, M3C 2T8 Attention: Loula March.

  11. Miscellaneous.

    The Contest will be governed, construed and interpreted under the laws of CANADA. By participating in the Contest, entrants agree (i) to be bound by these Official Rules and by the decisions of Pearson which are final and binding in all respects and (ii) to the use of the information supplied by entrant by Pearson, its subsidiaries and affiliates within Pearson Education, Inc. and certain websites affiliated with Pearson for marketing and advertising purposes. Pearson reserves the right to suspend or cancel the Contest or any entrant's participation in the Contest should any cause beyond Pearson's control affect the administration, security or proper play of the Contest. Entrants who violate these Official Rules, tamper with the operation of the Contest or engage in any conduct that is detrimental to Pearson, the Contest or any other entrant (as determined in Pearson's sole discretion) are subject to disqualification. The winner will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and publicity/liability release that must be returned within fifteen (15) days of notification attempt or prize may be awarded to an alternate. Pearson reserves the right to reject entry forms from persons whose eligibility is in question or who have been disqualified or are otherwise ineligible to enter the Contest.   12. Winner's Name.

  13. Contest Sponsor.
