This course is not about old ways of teaching civics, that is a focus on the structures, processess, and the legal aspects of our governmental institutions. This course is about the ideas and practices of participatory democracy, it's about challenges of governing communities in which diverse beliefs and values coexist.
The curriculum is issue-based, confronting controversies on the local, national, and global levels. Most importantly, it's about personal empowerment, building the knowledge and civic literacy skills that will assist young people to play a more informed, purposeful, and active role in the civic life of their communities.
