Children construct their own understanding by building on, or making connections to, ideas and knowledge they already have. As John Van de Walle explains, understanding is "a measure of the quality and quantiy of connections that an idea has with existing ideas".
In the diagram below, the red dot represents a new idea that was constructed from existing ideas, represented by the blue dots. Since the new idea is connected to many existing ideas, the new idea will be well understood.
