How does Diet and Exercise Affect Body Systems?

Background

September 2001
Our fast paced, technologically based society has had a great impact on human health. Even though our knowledge of what is good and bad for our bodies and our health in general has increased immensely over the last 50 years, that has not translated into a healthier population overall. Per capita there are more overweight people living in North America than any other continent in the world. The sedentary lifestyle we have adopted combined with unhealthy eating habits also impacts our body systems which must cope with the neglect and abuse they receive.

On the other hand, knowledge of the physiology of our body systems has improved greatly and we have learned a great deal about how we can improve the functioning of our body systems through physical training and proper diet.
