Scenario

Hybrid automobiles employ an engine that combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor resulting in a vehicle with better fuel efficiency. As the major automobile manufacturers move toward the production of hybrid vehicles, the need for public education is increasing. The new technologies that power these vehicles are so unique that the average consumer has no idea how a hybrid vehicle actually works or even what is meant by the term hybrid engine.

As a freelance writer, you have been hired to write an article for Auto Seller magazine. The magazine is interested in an article that will explain the technology involved in hybrid automobile engines. The audience for your article is the average automobile consumer, so be sure to cover the basics.

Part A: Research

Research the following ideas to facilitate you the consumer report that you are writing.

Compare an automobile that is powered by a conventional internal combustion engine with an automobile that is powered by an electric motor. Use the following criteria:

horsepower
top speed
distance travelled without fill-up or recharge
use several criteria of your own choosing
  1. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of routinely using electric motors power an automobile?

  2. Describe the historical development of the electric motor.

  3. Analyse and describe the operation of electric motors based on principles related to magnetic fields

Part B: Testing and Inquiry

Using the Internet prepare a consumer report on a hybrid automobile. Several manufacturers, such as Toyota and Honda are now producing these cars. You can choose any car manufacturer you wish..

Part C: Analyze and Reflect

Establish your own criteria and consider the effects of hybrid vehicles on society? Be sure to outline the ways that the automobile affects the manufacturer and consumer.

Part D: Communicate

Organize your consumer report using the following sections:

  1. an overview of the product and a discussion of the product trends
  2. a detailed discussion of the product types (internal combustion vs. hybrid engines
  3. a summary of the key features of the hybrid engine vehicle
  4. a rating summary giving the benefits and disadvantages of hybrid engine vehicles
