ISBN-13 and Book Ordering
Until full implementation of ISBN-13 takes place in January 2007, the continued use of 10-digit ISBNs remains the standard and is recommended. Beginning January 2007, the use of 13-digit ISBNs becomes the standard.
During the transition to ISBN-13 prior to January 2007, most publishers and distributors are already preparing to accept orders using 13-digit ISBNs, while retaining the capability to accept orders using the 10-digit ISBNs currently assigned to books. Dual numbering (the use of both 10-digit and 13-digit ISBNs) will allow for either ISBN to be used for book identification at least during the period leading up to the full implementation of ISBN-13 in January 2007.
Schools, libraries, retailers and other institutions are encouraged to contact publishers directly to find out more about their implementation plans and schedules and what impact these will have on them.
