Human Stem Cell Research

September 2001

Scenario

The Canadian government has hired you as a consultant to look into the science of stem cell research, as well as the moral and ethical problems that are fuelled by this new research. You will also need to find out what other countries are doing with regards to legislation governing this controversial topic.

Part A: Research the Issue

  1. What are stem cells?
  2. What does the term pluripotent mean?
  3. If every cell in the human body (except sex cells) contain the same number of chromosomes, all with identical genetic makeup, then why can’t all cells act as stem cells?
  4. What is the difference between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells?
  5. Why is stem cell research so controversial?
  6. Why do scientists feel stem cell research is so important. How do they see it possibly being used in the future? Name two diseases or disorders that may benefit from the use of stem cells.
  7. Read the story about the Nash family. How did the Nash family obtain the stem cells needed to treat Molly’s Fanconi anemia?
  8. How, in a way, did they sidestep the controversy surrounding the use of stem cells?
  9. Briefly describe the accident that happened to the actor Christopher Reeve and the injury he sustained.
  10. How could stem cells possibly enable him to one day walk again?
  11. Name three other diseases or disorders that involve the death of healthy cells which could possibly benefit from stem cell research.

Part B: Analyzing the Data

  1. After considerable deliberation with his advisors, United States President George Bush recently released an announcement regarding government funding of stem cell research. Summarize what was said and how it was received by both pro-life supporters and stem cell researchers.
  2. A detailed discussion on stem cell research funding in the United States can be found at this link.
  3. Britain has developed a more liberal policy governing stem cell research. Outline this countries’ position using this link.

Part C: Make a Report

  1. Create a report for the Minister of Heath which outlines the value of stem cell research and also the moral and ethical implications of continuing to allow stem cell research to continue.
  2. Include your own personal recommendation as to the direction the legislation should take.
