about the authors

Angela M. Thompson obtained a Ph.D. in kinesiology from the University of Saskatchewan. She is an Associate Professor of human kinetics at St. Francis Xavier University. An Outstanding Teacher Award recipient in 2005 (StFX) and Distiguished Teaching Award winner (AAU) in 2007, Angie teaches principles of human movement, child growth and development, and health education. She is an avid researcher focusing primarily on physical activity, physical fitness, and health in children and youth. Community contributions include StFX Service Learning Advisory Committee and Research Ethics Board; Nova Scotia Alliance for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity; and Active Kids, Healthy Kids strategy. She makes various presentations, including keynote addresses, focused on physical activity promotion, early childhood development, chronic disease prevention, behaviour change, and education. The fifth Canadian edition of Health: The Basics is her third effort at textbook publishing; her first achievement was the first Canadian edition of Total Fitness and Wellness, 2006.

Rebecca J. Donatelle is an Associate Professor in Public Health and is a Coordinator of Public Health Promotion and Education Programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences. She has a Ph.D. in community health/health education, an M.Sc. in health education, and a B.Sc. with majors in both health/physical education and English. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist.
 
Becky is a highly involved, student–centred teacher and mentor for undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Public Health at Oregon State University. Although her main emphasis is in the area of public health promotion and health education, she teaches a wide range of students from many disciplines on the Oregon State campus.
 
In addition to her varied teaching responsibilities, Becky is an active researcher in the area of health behaviours and behaviour change, including studies with a focus on motivating behaviour change, the use of social support in facilitating behaviour change, the use of community supports to assist individuals in changing high–risk behaviours, and the role of stress in health and disease.
