Most capitalization errors are summed up by the following rules:
1. Use a capital letter to refer to a specific noun.
Example: Toronto, the CN Tower, the Red River
2. Capitalize nationalities, religions and languages.
3. Capitalize the days of the week.
4. Capitalize the names of months.
5. Capitalize holidays.
6. Capitalize a title that precedes a proper name.
Example: Personnel Director Claude Rio was honoured.
7. Capitalize the personal pronoun I.
8. Capitalize the only first word in the complimentary close of a letter.
Example: Yours truly
9. Capitalize the first word of a quotation.
10. Do not capitalize an academic subject unless it has a number.
Example: If you need to spend a lot of time on marketing this semester, don’t take Economics 311. It’s a very heavy course.
11. Do not capitalize school terms.
Example: New enrolment for the winter semester will be 800.
12. Do not capitalize seasons.
