What is Our Catholic Community?
A unique literacy resource that provides opportunities for students to read, write, talk about, and reflect on their faith in the context of critical literacy. Our Catholic Community will help students
- look at the world through a Catholic lens.
- make connections to their Catholic faith and church traditions.
- find Jesus in their school life, home life, parish life, and community life.
- communicate increasingly complex ideas and information using a greater variety of oral, written, and media forms.
- develop critical literacy skills and strategies by exploring issues related to fairness, equity, and social justice.
- analyse the structure and elements of a variety of text forms.
Components:
Student Cards
- 8 four-page selections per grade
- Engaging topics with exciting visual designs
- Range of text types and levels
- Talk, write, and read activities for revisiting the selection as a whole class, in small groups, or independently
Teacher’s Guide
- 4-page teaching plan for each Student Card including an overview of Catholic connections and suggestions for shared, guided, and independent lessons
- Line Masters to support instruction in Catholicity, language, inquiry, and critical literacy
- Assessment Masters for teacher tracking and student reflection
