We have designed an Instructor's Manual to supplement the material provided in the first five chapters of Landmarks: A Process
Reader, Second Edition. You can access it through the Instructor Central site. Just click on "Instructor Resources" and follow the
directions.
As composition teachers, we know how challenging it can be to present nonfiction prose in instructive and thought-provoking ways. We want to
ask questions that will encourage students to read critically and will lead to lively classroom debate; however, we often find that because our
classes are so diverse—due to the differing skill levels, interests, and backgrounds of our students—the questions that are typically included in
essay anthologies do not meet our needs. Sometimes they are too simple, sometimes they are too difficult, and sometimes they do not address the
issues that we feel are important for effective discussion.
Thus, this manual provides you with many alternatives to choose from, depending on the needs of you and your classes. For each essay we have
included the following:
- a brief summary of the essay
- an indication of the essay's level of difficulty
- content-based questions designed to begin discussion
- strategy-based questions designed to encourage close analysis
- connections to related readings in Landmarks, Second Edition
This manual brings together what each of us has learned while teaching these essays, and we hope that you will find our suggestions helpful in
adapting the material in Landmarks, Second Edition to your needs. Please consider sharing your experiences and suggestions with us and
with other instructors who are using the text.
