Suggestions for Further Reading

Carter, R. (1998). Mapping the mind. London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson.

Although not exclusively about language, this book is a beautifully illustrated book describing the “geography” of the brain’s functional areas.

Just, M. A., & Carpenter, P. A. (1987). The psychology of reading and language comprehension. Boston, MA: Allyn and Bacon.

Pinker, S. (1994). The language instinct: How the mind creates language. New York: William Morrow.

The book by Pinker provides a general overview on cognitive science research regarding language, and the book by Just and Carpenter focuses on written language.

Berko Gleason, J. (1993). The development of language. New York, NY: Macmillan.

This book does an excellent job of describing language acquisition in infants and children.

de Luce, J., & Wilder, H. T. (1983). Language in primates: Perspectives and implications. New York, NY: Springer-Verlag.

This book describes attempts to teach language to nonhuman primates. It also describes the controversies about the success and significance of these attempts.
