Suggestions for Further Reading

Christensen, L. B. (1994). Experimental methodology (6th ed.). Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

Kiess, H. O., & Bloomquist, D. W. (1985). Psychological research methods: A conceptual approach. Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

Several standard textbooks discuss the scientific method in psychological research. The Christensen book covers ethical and practical issues as well as theoretical ones, and the Kiess and Bloomquist book describes statistical tests.

Barber, T. X. (1976). Pitfalls in human research. New York: Pergamon Press.

McCain, G., & Segal, E. M. (1981). The game of science (4th ed.). Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole.

Both of these books are rather entertaining accounts of the whys and wherefores of the scientific method. Most of us enjoy reading about others' mistakes, perhaps thinking that we could have done things better. Barber's book allows us to indulge in this activity; it discusses specific instances of studies that were flawed.

Bell, J. (1991). Evaluating psychological information: Sharpening your critical thinking skills. Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

Bell's book provides what the title claims: an excellent way to sharpen your critical thinking skills. It is full of exercises to help you accomplish that goal.

Collins, A. (1988). The sleep room. Toronto: Lester & Orpen Dennys Limited.

Collins tells a stark story of the brainwashing experiments conducted in the 1950s and 1960s in Montreal at the Allan Memorial Institute. She received the Governor General's Literary Award (non-fiction) for this book in 1988.
