Chapter 1 Process in Technical Writing-Internet Exercise

Analyze a Web site to determine if it fulfils the characteristics of technical writing outlined in Chapter 1. For this exercise, you may examine a Web site of a major corporation, professional society, small business, or an academic institution. Please complete the following questions about the technical writing process:

  1. What is the purpose of the Web site? What response does the author want from the readers? Please give reasons for your answers.
  2. Who is the intended audience of the Web site? What assumptions did the author make about the information needs of the readers? Use the five questions in Chapter 1 "Audience Analysis Step 1" to help structure your answer.
  3. Did the author overcome the typical barriers that people face when reading technical information? Please give reasons for your answers.
